Yard and wood waste
Yard and wood waste includes:
- Grass
- Weeds
- Flowers
- Tree and brush prunings
- Other green waste
State law prohibits the disposal of yard and wood waste with garbage. This type of waste is generated from both commercial and residential generators. At RRT composting facilities, the material is ground and mixed, then placed in open static piles for composting. Water is added as needed. Piles are turned an average of three times per year to aerate the material. To learn more, view the yard waste composting process.
The finished compost is screened and sold to commercial and residential markets for the following uses:
- Soil amendment for gardens, golf courses, playing fields
- Fill for planting trees and shrubs
- Direct land application
