RRT’s Resource Recovery Facility In Newport Minnesota

We believe this facility is an almost priceless asset to the community.  As such, millions of dollars of maintenance costs and capital expenses have been spent each year to keep this facility in excellent condition for the past 25 years.  We say almost priceless because the estimate to replace this facility would be difficult to justify under current market conditions for waste.  The State of Minnesota is fortunate to have a facility such as RRT Newport available to process waste that is economically feasible for many years to come.  Without this facility approximately 400,000 tons of municipal solid waste would go to the landfill each year instead of being used to create energy.

Facility Activity and Energy Created:

• RRT receives and processes material six days per week, year round (except Christmas Day).
• Approximately 400,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) is transformed into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) each year.
• This fuel is converted by Xcel Energy into 39 megawatts of energy—enough to supply over 22,000 homes each year.
